Dr Jan Paul Frölke is one of four pioneers worldwide who further developed the revolutionary bone-anchored prosthesis technology for individuals with limb amputation. He has performed this treatment at the Radboudumc since 2009 and at AOFE Clinics since 2021 helping hundreds of people from various countries to improve mobility and quality of life. Dr. Jeffrey O. Anglen is currently an Orthopaedic Surgeon with 36 years of experience specializing in Orthopaedic Traumatology. Outside of his medical professional endeavors, Dr. Anglen is a Tai Chi practitioner and teacher.

Dr. Christopher T. Born is currently a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Brown University with over 40 years of experience specializing in Trauma. His research interests are in Metalorganic Antimicrobial Coatings and Rapid Visualization of Bacteria. Dr. Born holds an endowed Professorship with the best name, “Intrepid Heroes Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery”. His current primary professional focus is student education and research.
Michael W. Chapman, MD, FAOA, FAAOS, FACS, FIOTA, FBOA(H)
Dr. Michael W. Chapman is Professor Emeritus at the University of California Davis, and a highly distinguished orthopaedic trauma surgeon with 58 years of experience. A pioneering leader in the field, his career has been dedicated to advancing trauma care and surgical education. His research interests are in bone graft substitutes. Outside of his professional pursuits, Dr. Chapman is an avid snow skier and mountaineer who continues to embrace challenge and adventure beyond the operating room.
Edward Harvey MD, MSc, FRCSC, FIOTA, FAAOS
Dr. Edward Harvey is a distinguished Professor of Surgery with 25 years of experience specializing in Trauma and Upper Extremity. His research interests are in Sensors, Compartment Syndrome, and Fracture Healing. Beyond his academic and clinical achievements, Dr. Harvey enjoys playing hockey and is also the founder of multiple startups.
Thomas F. Higgins MD, FIOTA
Dr. Thomas F. Higgins is currently the Chief of Orthopaedic Trauma at the University of Utah, with 25 years of experience specializing in orthopaedic trauma. His research interests are in tibial plateau fractures, nonunion/malunion, and NSAIDs. Dr. Higgins has been active in clinical work, research and education both in the United States and abroad. He has worked in eight countries to date, and is eager to continue to combine his passion for orthopaedic trauma and learning about other cultures. As a member of the OTA Board of Directors, he is very excited about the continued collaboration and cooperation between the OTA and IOTA. Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Higgins enjoys traveling, biking, skiing, and running with family.
Ross Leighton, MD, FIOTA
Dr. Ross Leighton is currently a Professor of Surgery with over 30 years of experience specializing in traumaplasty. His research interests are in fat embolism, compartment syndrome, periarticular and periprosthetic fractures. During his free time, Dr. Leighton enjoys sailing, racing sailboats, and playing hockey.
Douglas W. Lundy, MD, MBA, FIOTA
Dr. Douglas Lundy has over 25 years or experience specializing in Orthopaedic Trauma. He is currently the Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at St Luke's University Health Network, and his research interests are in Healthcare Systems and Economics. Dr. Lundy dedicates significant effort to healthcare initiatives in the developing world.
Theodore Miclau III, MD, FIOTA
Dr. Theodore Miclau has over 28 years of experience specializing in Orthopaedic Trauma. He is currently the Professor and Vice Chairman at the Orthopaedic Trauma Institute, the International Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, the Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, and Director at the Orthopaedic Trauma Institute. His research interests are in basic biology of bone healing, clinical management of orthopaedic trauma, and international orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Miclau grew up in Puerto Rico and manages the Puerto Rican National Diving Team.
Dr. Miclau is the Past-President of the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS), Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA), and Past-President of the International Combined Orthopaedic Research Societies. He is currently the Steering Committee Chair of the International Orthopaedic Trauma Association, Committee Chair of the Osteosynthesis and Trauma Care Foundation’s Research Committee, and Chair of the Clinical Science Advisory Committee (CSAC) for the AO Foundation. He organizes the Consortium of Orthopaedic Academic Traumatologists (COACT), which has the goal of enhancing the collaborative efforts of North American centers that engage in education and research in low and low-middle income countries, and the Asociación de Ciruganos Traumatólogos en las Americas (ACTUAR), which is a growing surgeon network dedicated to promoting research in Latin America. He is an Honorary Member of multiple national orthopaedic societies, including the Federación Mexicana de Colegios De Ortopedia y Traumatologia (FEMECOT), Cuban Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (SCOT), Sociedad Colombiana de Cirugia Ortopedico y Traumatologia (SCCOT), and the Argentina Association of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (AAOT). He has recently been recognized with the Alfred R. Shands Award from the ORS, Transformative Contribution Award from the ICORS, and the Honorary Award from the Osteosynthesis and Trauma Care Foundation (OTCF).
Anna N. Miller, MD, FAAOS, FACS, FAOA, FIOTA
Dr. Anna Miller is currently a Jerome J. Gilden Distinguished Professor and Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Miller has 19 years of experience specializing in Orthopaedic Trauma. Her research interests are in clinical outcomes, population health outcomes through database research, and socioeconomic disparities in musculoskeletal health. Dr. Miller has a native plant garden with platinum certification from her local conservation society. During her free time, she enjoys reading and bird watching.
Hassan Mir, MD, MBA, FIOTA
Dr. Hassan Mir is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery & Medical Education and prior Associate Dean of Cultural Enrichment & Environment at University of South Florida (USF), and Director of Orthopaedic Trauma Research at Florida Orthopaedic Institute (FOI). He previously served as Residency Program Director for several years.
Dr. Mir completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at the Campbell Clinic in Memphis, TN. He then completed an additional year of fellowship training in Orthopaedic Traumatology at Tampa General Hospital. He obtained his Physician Executive MBA at Auburn University.
Dr. Mir's clinical interests include care of the polytraumatized patient, pelvic and acetabular fractures, and complex peri-articular fractures. He also has interests in clinical and health policy research, medical education, and involvement with multiple national orthopaedic organizations. He has served in numerous local, regional and national leadership roles including as the Chief Financial Officer for the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA), on the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgery (AAOS) Diversity Advisory Board and Council on Advocacy, on the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) Board of Directors, on the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma, and as a consultant reviewer for multiple journals. He also consults with multiple industry partners on innovative projects to improve patient care.
Dr. Mir has authored over 200 peer-reviewed and invited publications, and multiple book chapters. He has presented his research at numerous national and international meetings. He has participated as faculty at dozens of courses and training programs across the globe. His dedication to education was rewarded with the Resident Teaching Award at both Vanderbilt and at USF/FOI. His career productivity has been recognized nationally as a recipient of the AOA/JOA Traveling Fellowship to Japan, as an AAOS Leadership Fellow, and as an AOA American-British-Canadian (ABC)Traveling Fellow to the UK/Australia/New Zealand.
Dr. Mir grew up in West Virginia and was high school Valedictorian. He obtained his undergraduate degree at WVU, where he was Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He received his Doctor of Medicine from WVU and was Alpha Omega Alpha.
During his free time, Dr. Mir loves playing tennis and watching Formula 1.
Brian Mullis, MD, FIOTA
Dr. Brian Mullis currently serves as the Vice Chairman, Program Director, and Professor at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine. With 18 years of specialized experience in trauma care, he brings a wealth of expertise to his role. An intriguing fact about Dr. Mullis is that he once spent four months living in a Russian jail cell.
William T. Obremskey, MD, MPH, FIOTA
Dr. William Obremskey is currently the Director of Orthopedic Trauma and Research at Vanderbilt University Medical Center with over 30 years of experience specializing in Orthopedic Trauma.
Dr. Obremskey also has expertise in musculoskeletal trauma outcomes, fiscal analysis, and study design. He served as the Chairman of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association Evidenced Based Medicine Committee for 10 years. He has authored four chapters on Outcomes in orthopaedic trauma and three meta-analysis articles on orthopaedic trauma conditions as well as > 260 articles. He has served on the Steering committee of the Major Extremity Trauma Research Consortium (METRC) that has been awarded $150,000,000 to conduct multipleprospective randomized trials for the Department of Defense (DoD).
Dr. Obremskey is the principal investigator on three of these projects. He is currently PI on a $4.5 million grant on early weight bearing of ankle and tibia plateau fractures and a $3.2 M DoD grant on PO vs IV antibiotic use in infected nonunions. He has a clinical and research interest in Knee Dislocations, Scapula fractures and Necrotizing Fasciitis as well as infection. He has a strong record of mentorship for orthopaedic trauma fellows, orthopaedic residents, and medical students. Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Obremskey loves to ski and travel with his wife and family.
Andrew Schmidt, MD, FIOTA
Dr. Andrew Schmidt has over 31 years of experience specializing in Geriatric Trauma, Arthroplasty, and Periarticular Fractures. He is currently the Interim Chief Medical Officer at Hennepin Healthcare. Dr. Schmidt's research interests are in compartment syndrome, geriatric fractures, and infection. During his free time, Dr. Schmidt enjoys skiing and traveling.
Milan Sen, MD, MBA, MS, FIOTA
Dr. Milan Sen is currently the Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at NYC Health+Hopsitals/Jacobi and an Associate Professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY. Dr. Sen has 20 years of experience specializing in trauma and upper extremity. His research interests are in fracture fixation outcomes, aging, and health care delivery. Dr. Sen is the proud owner of a Scottish Fold cat named Robert the Bruce.
Marc Swiontkowski, MD, FIOTA
Dr. Marc Swiontkowski has 39 years of experience specializing in trauma, fractures, non-unions, malunions, children's fractures, osteomyelitis, and leg length inequality. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota. His research interests are in femoral neck fractures and microcirculation of bone and soft tissues. Dr. Swiontkowski is also a past president of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA). During his free time, Dr. Swiontkowski enjoys practicing golf and baking bread.
Paul Tornetta III, MD, PhD, FIOTA
Dr. Paul Tornetta has over 30 years of experiencing specializing in Orthopaedic Trauma. Dr. Tornetta is currently the Chief and Chair, Professor and Residency Program Director in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine and the Director of Orthopaedic Trauma for the Boston Medical Center. His research interests are in pelvis, tibia, femur, upper extremity, and methodology. He is also a past president of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) and is the current president for the AAOS from 2024-2025. Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Tornetta enjoys photography and ocean vistas.
Richard S. Yoon, MD, FAAOS, FIOTA
Dr. Richard Yoon is currently the Fellowship Director and Director of Orthopaedic Research at Jersey City Medical Center. He specializes in Orthopaedic Trauma and Adult Reconstruction, while his research interests are in periprosthetic fracture, infection and fracture, and traumaplasty. Since the inaugural IOTA Triennial Meeting, Dr. Yoon has met and collaborated with 7 other IOTA Fellows from around the world. Dr. Yoon firmly believes that with our advances in technology and being more connected than ever, this is our time to collaborate and join forces with our colleagues from around the world to deliver the most comprehensive research and evidence-based care to all of our patients.
Matthew Costa, PhD, FRCS (Tr&Orth) , FIOTA
Dr. Matthew Costa is currently a Professor of Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery at the University of Oxford and Honorary Consultant Trauma Surgeon at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. His research interest is in clinical effectiveness studies. Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Costa is a lifelong Liverpool Football Club fan and enjoys rooting for his favorite team.
Lynn Hutchings, MB BChir, MSc, DPhil, FIOTA
Dr. Lynn Hutchings is currently a Consultant in Orthopaedic Trauma at North Bristol NHS Trust with 21 years of experience specializing in orthopaedic trauma, orthoplastics, pelvis and acetabulum, and complex trauma. She holds a Masters and Doctorate in the Physiology of Polytrauma, and her research focuses on major trauma, orthoplastic and pelvic and acetabular outcomes, and radiation protection for orthopaedic surgeons. Outside of her professional work, Dr. Hutchings is an avid runner, often found training outdoors with her dogs, and typically completes one or two marathons or ultramarathons each year.
Nigel Rossiter, MB, BS, FRCS(ED), FRCSEd(Tr&Orth), FIOTA
Dr. Nigel Rossiter has over 35 years of expertise specializing in orthopaedic trauma, global trauma, and surgical education. He is currently a consultant adviser for the OTS, RCSEd, Primary Trauma Care Foundation, WHO Trauma group (GACI), G4Alliance, and SELF. Dr. Rossiter's research interests are in global surgical trauma education. During his free time, Dr. Rossiter enjoys many hobbies including being a bee keeper, furniture restorer, sailor, skier, and rugby mad. While Dr. Rossiter is currently retired from clinical practice, he is still incredibly involved in global trauma and education.
