Ukraine War

Russia has been at war with Ukraine since February 2014. After a violent suppression of the Maidan peaceful protest in Kyiv, which resulted in the death of over 100 protestors, Russian military forces invaded and occupied Crimea. Not long after, Russian forces were the key factor in the creation of breakaway “republics” in Donetsk and Luhansk with a persistent hybrid war with fighting across a line of demarcation for 7 years. On February 24, 2022, Russia massed and then launched a full-scale invasion using land, air, and naval forces to attack sovereign Ukraine. Currently, the cities of Chernihiv, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mariupol, Mykolaiv face encirclement, while Russian forces have come to rely on indiscriminate bombardment in many regions of Ukraine. Attempts at establishing humanitarian corridors have had limited success.

Since the start of the war, there have been at least 43 attacks on health-care facilities and patients in Ukraine (source). As we have stated in our letter Stand For Ukraine, The OTA cautions its interested members on travel to Ukraine and adjacent regional areas of conflict unless with a well-established relief organization due to concerns over volunteers’ personal security and safety and desire to minimize inadvertent consumption of critical resources.
