Emil Schemitsch, MD, FIOTA received the first OTA Keystone Honor
Dr. Emil Schemitsch is Chair of the Department of Surgery, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University and Chief of the Department of Surgery for London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Health Care London. Dr. Schemitsch is also an Affiliate Scientist at the Keenan Research Centre of the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute and past head of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at St. Michael’s Hospital. A University of Toronto graduate in Medicine, Dr. Schemitsch completed his orthopaedic training at the University of Toronto. To broaden his clinical exposure, he trained at the University of Washington (Harborview Medical Center) and Harvard University.
Dr. Schemitsch has been Program Chair of numerous academic national and international meetings. He founded the Basic Science Focus Forum, the primary forum for the dissemination of basic science research related to trauma, of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association. Dr. Schemitsch is on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma and is the Editor-in-Chief for OTA International. Dr. Schemitsch has been a senior member of the Canadian Orthopaedic Trauma Society and has been on the steering committee of numerous trials that have changed practice in Orthopaedic Trauma. Dr. Schemitsch’s program of research in musculoskeletal trauma and arthritis has led to more than 630 publications in top journals, numerous grants (CIHR, PSI, OTA, AO, and OMEGA) and hundreds of guest lectures around the world.
